Responses to Mythicism and Christ Before Jesus
Claim-by-claim responses to mythicism.web.app and the arguments associated with Matthew Britt and Jaaron Wingo's Christ Before Jesus, with academic sources and primary-text references.
This archive follows the claims published at mythicism.web.app and the wider argument made in Christ Before Jesus. Each response leads with the disputed inference, identifies the evidence the claim needs, and tests it against primary texts and relevant scholarship. A weakness in an apologetic argument is not a demonstration that Jesus or Paul was invented.

Claim-by-claim responses
Scholarly consensus
An accusation about scholars’ motives is not a rebuttal of their evidence.
Before Jesus
Resemblance is not descent. Earlier uses of a word or religious motif do not establish a pre-Christian Jesus cult.
Pontius Pilate
Forged Pilate literature does not establish that the execution under Pilate was invented.
Thallus
Removing Thallus from an apologetic list does not remove the historical case for Jesus.
Paul
The maximalist case has to explain Paul’s letters and reported personal contacts, not merely dismiss them.
Die for a Lie
Defeating a resurrection apologetic does not defeat the case that Jesus existed.
Josephus
The Testimonium and the James notice are separate passages. An interpolation argument for one does not settle the other.
Papias
Papias’s limitations do not establish that the traditions he discusses originated in the second century.
Pliny the Younger
Pliny documents Christian practice; attacking a stronger claim does not refute the evidence he actually supplies.
Tacitus
Declaring Annals 15.44 an interpolation is a hypothesis to prove, not a way to make the evidence disappear.
Suetonius
The Chrestus notice requires interpretation. Its ambiguity does not establish a fictional Jesus.
Polycarp
Uncertainty about a letter’s composition is not proof that its references to earlier Christian writings were invented.
Phlegon
A disputed darkness report is not the foundation of the historical case for Jesus.
Marcion
A cluster cannot establish which text came first. Marcion priority needs an argument for the direction of dependence.
The Gospels
Errors in the Gospels do not add up to proof that Jesus was invented.
Prophecies
Failed prophecy arguments challenge claims of fulfilment. They do not establish that Jesus never existed.
Anachronisms
An anachronism can expose a narrator’s setting. It does not establish that the person narrated never existed.
Ignatius
A disputed date for Ignatius does not turn his letters into evidence for a purely celestial founder.
Didache
An anonymous church manual is not evidence that Christianity’s founder was invented.
Justin Martyr
A dispute about recognising the messiah is not automatically a denial that Jesus lived.
Mara bar Serapion
An uncertain identification in Mara bar Serapion cannot settle the existence question.
Lucian of Samosata
Lucian’s failure to use the name Jesus does not erase the figure described in his satire.
Clement
Disputing the date of 1 Clement does not dispose of its references to Paul and the earlier movement.
Celsus
Celsus attacks the Christian account of Jesus. His surviving polemic does not establish that Jesus was invented.
Irenaeus
Irenaeus’s mistakes are not a demonstration that the entire earlier movement was fabricated.
Tertullian
Tertullian’s distance from Jesus does not establish the late invention of the texts he disputes.
P52
Redating P52 does not date John’s composition, still less establish that Jesus was invented.
Manuscripts
Late copies do not prove late invention. Textual variation does not prove a fictional founder.
Relics
A false relic is evidence against that relic, not against the existence of Jesus.
Talmud
Late rabbinic polemic cannot carry a claim that Jesus was invented.
Eusebius
Distrust of Eusebius cannot substitute for evidence that he fabricated a particular passage.
Shroud of Turin
The case for a historical Jesus does not depend on the Shroud of Turin.
Calendar
A calendar error is not an argument that Jesus never existed.
Historical-Critical Method
Criticising a historical method does not establish the opposite historical conclusion.
Ron Wyatt
Ron Wyatt’s claims are not a foundation of the historical case. Refuting them does not establish mythicism.
Stylometry
Stylistic similarity is not a second-century date. A dendrogram does not demonstrate CBJ’s reconstruction.
Britt & Wingo
A profile of the authors behind Christ Before Jesus and the standing of their book – assembled from their own published words and from named reviewers, including the mythicists who reject their method while sharing their conclusion.
Christ Before Jesus
Christ Before Jesus proposes a second-century reconstruction of the New Testament. Its clusters must establish authorship, chronology and dependence; resemblance alone cannot do that.
