Read Christ Before God: A Structural Autopsy of Methodological Collapse in Britt and Wingo’s Christ Before Jesus on Academia.edu.

Trout organises his critique around statistical methodology, logical coherence, historical accuracy and internal contradictions. He challenges sample sizes, validation procedures, the influence of genre and the move from stylistic similarity to a second-century chronology. He also argues that the book’s own Pauline results support a more unified authorship pattern than its thesis suggests.

Best for: readers wanting an extended, organised critique rather than a brief notice. The paper identifies Trout as an independent researcher. An Academia.edu upload is not evidence of journal publication or peer review; the directory does not represent it as either. The title is Christ Before God, although the book being reviewed is Christ Before Jesus.

The direct examination of the book

Statistical Stylometrics: The Good, the Bad, and the Horrid (Part 1: Paul) — 22 May 2025. Negative

Carrier places the book alongside other attempts to use stylometry on the Pauline letters. His objections include the absence of usable numerical information in the graphs, insufficiently specified inputs and procedures, and the need to validate a method before treating its output as an authorship result. His criticism matters as a disagreement within mythicist discussion: supporting mythicism does not entail accepting Britt and Wingo’s argument.

Best for: understanding Carrier’s methodological objections in the context of other stylometric studies. This is an essay on his own website, not a journal review.

The panel includes Aaron Adair and Richard Carrier, hosted by Godless Engineer. The uploader’s description assigns Adair the discussion of stylometric authorship attribution and Carrier the historical case, including manuscript evidence, early Christian citations and chronology. It explicitly presents the stream as an examination of the Christ Before Jesus thesis.

Best for: readers who prefer a long-form discussion bringing statistical and historical questions together. This description is based on the video’s published metadata, not a full transcript audit. The panel is one collaborative contribution; Carrier’s appearance is not an additional independent reviewer.

Read Litwa’s Christ Before Jesus review.

Litwa praises the book’s explanation of stylometry and considers some of its proposed connections worth further study. He also questions the handling of composite texts, offers scriptural imitation as an alternative explanation for Revelation’s language, and objects to using the results to establish dates. He challenges the identification of Irenaeus☦ with Luke–Acts because the surviving Greek is inadequate for the proposed comparison.

His review should be read in both directions: it contains substantive praise as well as consequential reservations. Describing it simply as an endorsement or a rejection would lose that distinction.

Read Review: Christ Before Jesus at Hume’s Apprentice / Skeptic Ink.

Covington recommends the book and finds substantial promise in its reconstruction. He nevertheless rejects a second-century date for the Pauline letters and calls for an expert response to the work. This is a brief favourable notice, useful for understanding the book’s positive reception; it does not provide an extended technical validation of the stylometric procedure.

Readers should be able to compare criticism with what the authors say for themselves.
